Teak Garden Furniture
Friday, September 18th, 2009Teak garden furniture is probably the most popular type of wooden outdoor furniture in use today – and for good reason too. Teak is a very long established hardwood tree which can grow to more than 30 meters or 100 feet tall. Its popularity is largely due to its durability which comes from its very fine impenetrable grain, which is further enhanced and strengthened by the natural oils and high levels of silica in the wood.
The only drawback with teak garden furniture is that it is in danger of becoming its own worst enemy, due to ht properties and benefits we just talked about above. When something becomes popular, we tend to over harvest it without giving much consideration to its future availability to us. Fortunately pretty much all the main teak forests are now managed ethically to ensure we don’t lose this wonderful and ancient tree, and can continue to enjoy its benefits and properties for many years to come.
When looking to buy your own teak garden furniture, you should first check that the manufacturer has used wood from a managed and sustainable plantation. This should be easily identifiable with a tag or label on the furniture.
The real beauty with teak is that you can never really go wrong with buying teak garden furniture, simply because it has such an elegant and classy look and feel about it. All teak outdoor garden furniture will age naturally and turn a silvery grey color over time. If you wish to preserve the original warm look of your teak, it’s simply a case of using a natural preservative or teak wood stain once or twice a year. This will help preserve the warm colors, and maintain the beautiful look and feel of all teak garden furniture.
Teak is very low maintenance, so there is no need to be put off by the thought that you will have to treat your furniture several times a year. The easiest approach is probably to apply a thin coat of natural teak preservative oil every time you clean the furniture, or after time you use it – once a month will be more than enough to keep it looking in top condition.
If you’ve already started looking for your modern teak outdoor garden furniture, you’re probably well aware that it’s not the cheapest type of garden or patio furniture on the market. This is partly due to the special and lengthy harvesting process that the trees have to go through – it can take between 2 and 3 years before a selected tree can actually be cut down ready for preparation, and each tree is usually at least 50 years old before it is suitable for selection.
Add to this the fact that teak is extremely hard, requiring carbide and even diamond tipped cutting tools to work it, and you can see how easily the costs start adding up. On top of that, teak garden furniture is very popular and in great demand, which adds to the high prices.
